at climbing walls features highest in a risk assessment? CWMA Courses. CWMA have designed a course and qualification that gives you the confidence that you require in your route setting staff. Safety is the primary concern; the safety of your routesetter and the safety of your customers is at the top of CWMA's list of essential knowledge for routesetters. CWMA route setting courses can be tailored to your need. Courses can be held at your centre, or at a number of venues around the country. Course Duration. CWMA route setting courses run for three days, with the time split between the safety issues that arise, and the practical nature of the job. Candidates can expect to spend two thirds of the course on ropes. Course Requirements. Candidates are expected to be competent climbers with a reasonable level of fitness and a knowledge of basic ropework techniques. There is no requirement for candidates to be 'expert' climbers. Candidates are expected to provide their own specialist route setting equipment that complies with the current legislation for mountaineering equipment. CWMA can supply specialist equipment at a discounted price. Qualification. Successful candidates will be awarded the qualification of CWMA Route Setter. The qualification is valid for three years from the pass date. Reassessment is required after three years. The CWMA Route Setting Course is recognised as being an example of best practice by the British Mountaineering Council. Course Content. The course covers statutory requirements, ropework and methods of ascending/descending, belays and knots, rescues, creative route setting, safe route setting and route testing. Course

The CWMA route setting course is run on behalf of CWMA by Percy Bishton. Percy's experience in route setting is unrivalled. He has been route setting professionally for over 8 years and has worked as a full time route setter for 6 years, logging an average of nearly 30 hours of route setting a week during this period. He is a BMC Accredited National route setter, and sets routes for the National competition series (BICC's), as well as for International competitions and the World Cup series. Percy is an ICC Forerunner - this being the best qualification for an international competition route- setter currently available. The ropework assessment for the CWMA route setters course is undertaken by an independent IRATA safety assessor. Courses run from May to October each year.
